The Beneficial Effects of Resveratrol

Although we still don’t know all of the beneficial effects of Resveratrol, the antioxidant is receiving accolades from scientific researchers for the interesting benefits they’ve found. Mice live longer – raising the question on what would happen if we gave it to humans. It’s been proven that the immune system gets a boost and that it may slow the aging process.

Other beneficial effects of Resveratrol include the possibility that it prevents cancer, enhances vision and protects and supports the cardiovascular system. Derived from grapes and other plants, Resveratrol is considered one of the best ways to protect ourselves from free radical damage caused by everything from the environment to the foods we eat.

Everyone was thrilled when it was announced by the media that red wine contained the antioxidant, Resveratrol, and that it could help your health and reverse the aging process. Many thought that white wine would have the same effect, but it won’t. Red wine uses the skins of grapes in its production process, whereas white wine doesn’t, and grape skins are where Resveratrol is found.

It also matters where the grapes are grown. If grown in moist climates of the north, grapes are found to contain more Resveratrol. Storing the wine away from sunlight also helps protect the restorative benefits of the wine.

Some people prefer to take a supplement rather than depend on red wine to give them the antioxidant, Resveratrol. Supplements are usually made from Polygonum cuspidatum, an herb which usually contains up to 50 percent Resveratrol.

One of the many beneficial effects of Resveratrol that’s being studied now is its restorative power to rejuvenate cell health during Alzheimer’s disease. Resveratrol has a cell-protective effect that may keep brain cells from deteriorating.

A scientific anti-aging study using Resveratrol was performed on fruit flies and worms using the same protocol used to extend the lives of monkeys and included putting them on a restrictive diet. It was found that Resveratrol activated the cells survival enzyme which acts to help cells repair and restore weak DNA.

Although studies are still being performed on the effects of Resveratrol on humans, the outlook is exciting. The possibilities are endless on how these amazing preliminary findings can affect our longevity and the quality of our lives.

Potential, beneficial effects of Resveratrol are likely to be discovered in the next few years. As an antioxidant, anti-infection agent, anti-inflammatory and to decrease the effects of aging, Resveratrol is coming into its own and future prospects for this miraculous chemical is only beginning.
