Different Types of Juicers

There is a wide selection of juicers out there and it’s often hard to decide which one is the best. We can’t really label a single juicer as the best one because there is nothing out there that will fit everyone’s needs. The type of produce you are going to juice and your budget should always be considered. If you are shopping around for a new juicer but you have no idea which one is right for you, check out the most common types of juicing machines below.

Centrifugal Juicer

This is the most common type and probably the most affordable juicer today. Also known as extractor, the centrifugal juicer works by processing fruits and vegetables with the shredder disc at high RPM. The spinning basket holds the pulp inside and the juice is passed through the holes in the other basket. The liquid exits through the sprout in front.

The centrifugal juicer is favored by many because it is affordable and it does a great job in extracting juice from most fruits and vegetables. Their only downside is that they are not effective when it comes to juicing grassed and leafy foods like spinach, lettuce, parsley and wheatgrass. Also, since this juicer uses high RPM, expect the juice to oxidize quickly. Some people suggest tossing the juice after 8 hours.

Single Gear/Masticating Juicer

As the name implies, this type of juicer uses a single gear that chews fruit and vegetable fiber to break up the plant cells. The result? More fiber, vitamins, minerals and enzymes! Single gear juicers are more efficient than centrifugal juicers in general because you get a higher yield from the same amount of food. It is capable of juicing any fruit or veggie. It also does a good job in extracting juice from grasses and leaves.

Single gear juicers operate at a slower speed generating you get less foam and heat. This means that you get more nutrition for every glass of juice. Low RPM also increases shelf life so if you like making a big batch of juice in the morning to last throughout the day the single gear juicer is perfect for you. Aside from extracting juices, you can also use this machine to homogenize foods to make pates, fruit sorbets and baby food.

Twin Gear/Triturating Juicer

This type of juicer offers the most benefits but it comes with a huge price. Twin gear juicers have slower speed than single gear juicers. This means even less oxidation from foam and heat. Low RPM also decreases aeration which means that you can store the juice in the fridge for a few days.

Twin gear juicers are considered to be the most efficient juicer because they can extract more juice from fruits, vegetables, spinach, pine needles and even wheatgrass. The pulp that comes out is the driest of all the types of juicers. Just like the single gear juicer, you can also use a twin gear juicer to make baby food and pates.
